ARTISTS COOPERATIVE

THE B COMPLEX

SCROLL DOWN

Affordable work and exhibition spaces for the Atlanta arts community

Founded in 1999, The B COMPLEX has emerged as one of Atlanta’s most eclectic and enduring artist conceived cooperative ownership communities. Located in the Capitol View neighborhood along the historic Murphy Avenue corridor, the property claims over 2 acres of one of the city’s last urban frontiers. Just 5 minutes drive from the heart of downtown, the B COMPLEX is walking distance from both the Oakland City rail station and the Atlanta Beltline’s Westside Trail.

Built during a period from the early 1900's through the early 1940’s, the expansive brick, steel and concrete warehouses comprise over 40,000 SF of “industrial strength” creative workspace. Situated on a heavily wooded site, a number of studios are nestled within a soaring tree canopy and dense bamboo forest.

At the heart of the complex is an expansive, light-filled exhibition and event space. Housed in the circa 1919 Lanham Cotton Cultivator Company factory, the gallery features a 5000 gallon bridged koi pond entryway and 140 foot long glass clerestory with 25’ ceilings. The creation of the B COMPLEX Cooperative facilitates the founding members' vision to establish a stable and supportive creative environment, owned and directed by artists. Sheltered from profit-driven development, the B COMPLEX proposes a legacy of truly affordable work and exhibition space for the Atlanta Arts community.

FRIDAY / SATURDAY, 10/4-5

(free event)

Beacon Dance will present the premier of a new work, “Decades”, the weekend of October 4 & 5, 2019, as part of The B Complex 20th Anniversary Celebration Exhibition and Performance event.  “Decades” draws inspiration from numerous resources, including the various musical periods from the late 1910’s through 2019, fashion trends over the 100 years from 1919 through 2019, and dance/movement styles and trends throughout the 10 decades.  Choreographed by Artistic Director D. Patton White, it will bring together these three passions of his—costume design, social dance, and music from numerous time periods.  This world premier work will feature dancers familiar to Beacon’s audiences as well as new faces to the Atlanta community.  The performance will conclude with the sale of all costume pieces that are worn during the performance, and White will offer brief social dance lessons in some of the dance styles for a post-performance dance party for all in attendance.
